Aww Nigel no-mates has a friend. He's called John Deere and he's a ride-on mower. Dave mowed the horses' track this afternoon and Nigel fell in love with the mower, followed it everywhere and kept poking at it and trying to make it play with him. Poor Nige seems to have issues.

Lovely ride this morning on Lyric. I've changed her to a peewee bit to help with the steering and she was very happy in it! Worked the FatPony in the afternoon & managed a short bareback ride (gasp!) in the rope halter. Zeus enjoyed whizzing about in the arena while I worked his mum.

Decided I would 'make Bodie Work' today!! Mowed the arena paddock yesterday. Normally with him I just amble up hte road. No reason he can't do some nice flatwork just doesn't overly enjoy it. The old bugger tried to buck me off twice then ran out of puff and was a docile as a lamb!! Made me really realise my confidence is pretty good as I would of got off after the first one in times gone by! Sam was rather trying today too! Grils were great at PC this morning so an allround good horsey day!

NH but relevant because I may, depending on the answer, end up drinking the Prisoner's water supply!! Is it possible to still get bugs from boiled water? Temuka water source is crap (again) and our wonderful Council brush off the complaints. Am I able to take a water sample to the local hospital for testing? My sickness appears to co-incide with an increase in my water intake even though I boil it.

I guess it depends on whether its a bug thats making it "bad" or whether is something else like chemical contamination or mineral imbalances etc. Mum and Dad were having problems for a while with dogs mysteriously getting ill and dying, couldn't figure out what it was, turned out the water was too acidic (I think, might have been the other way!) and now they filter it through something and its all good. This was the same water out of the same tank as the house used.

The Council switches supply over the summer months, Nic. They say the water is treated. We (and a great number of others here) have complained regularly for the last 3 years - with no results. Council said (3 yrs ago) "there is a leak somewhere; we know where it is; just need to fix it" !!!! Stock water is from a totally different source.

Quite possibly. You can also get water purification tablets to add after you boil it. And agree with Nic, check the pH of the water.

Boiling blue green algae is very very bad as it releases the toxins into the water, but most other things are killed by boiling for 3 mins. That's not "bring to the boil and let cool" as you would for a cuppa tea - it's actual boiling for 3 mins.

Just to add, not all the dogs were affected so badly they died, seemed to just be the younger ones. And it never seemed to have any effect on the people drinking it, but seeing as it was enough to be doing serious damage to dogs internal organs, it probably wouldn't have been that healthy for anyone or anything to have been drinking long term.

We had our water tested at a commercial testing lab when we moved here - the kids were always sick. The water we used to get was from the creek - full of all the greeblies and muck, with a bunch of colliforms thrown in for good measure - the doctor said I should be boiling the bath water it was so bad. We put in a bore and apart from being a bit high in salt (can't taste it, but not good if you're on a low salt diet) the bore water is lovely. Kids were impressed too because they could see the bottom of the bath (and the loo, so couldn't get away without flushing)! Any commercial lab should be able to test your water - or put you on to someone who does.

Hi Cath - Try Water Dynamics to see if they are around your area. They are upgrading our well pump at the moment for us and are going to get our well tested at the same time. (If they don't test it themselves they will be able to tell you who they use)

I know through Ravensdown you can get water quality tests done for drinking etc if that helps, not that expensive either

Thanks folks :o) Our stock water is from our own well and is 100% fine, or tastes it anyway, in comparison to the house water which is on the Downlands water scheme here. Every year we (as in multiple, multiple households) have this problem and the Council just fobs it off ... As with everywhere else, we pay our water rates etc and, as with everywhere else, get no bang for our buck. Ggggrrrr. Will be ringing the Council on Tuesday - it is a problem they must look at. I'm tired of being 'uncomfortable' when a certain distance away from the toilet - and not for spewing reasons either LOL. Neighbours have the exact same problem ... This problem only arises over a 3 month period when the supply is switched by the Council. May have to look at using the stock water over the summer months me thinks - mmmmm. Have to admit, it tastes wonderful. Miss my water (sad puppy eh?!)

Just wondering if anyone has a horse/pony I could loan for a couple of days . I need to take my old mare to vet for poss dental surgery and I thought she would go better with Blaze for moral support since she is the stressed out sort and never leaves home . But since BG died the other day that would leave Kiwi alone all day charging up and down and he is just coming right from his lameness ... is that pathetic or what . fantailfarm@mail.com cheers

Hi Olwen, where are you in Canty? We have a mini here that would be fine for that - she's a great baby sitter for both small and large horses! We're out towards Leeston.

Me : ) Thank you I have them on my watch-list. I'll have to have a measure-up. I'm wary of the SW stuff because we ordered one once before and it was the oddest fitting thing - was like each piece was a different size! We fell about laughing imagining the horse it was designed to fit, then we sent it back.

I'm officially giving up the riding part of horses. The mare's back was out again today "no not today please" in a polite "try and I KEEELLL you" way. So Horse Agility it is :-) Will help her core strength and fitness (and mine) and maybe when I'm in a position to do things regularly we can revisit the riding part. SO... I taught my pony to "heel" this morning :-) She's surprisingly good at it already. Was really funny when I sent her over the ditch and back...the bucking kicking complaints and general hoo har that went on and all she had to do was walk over it ;-)

Sometimes I think we definitely overlook the skill it takes and joy derived from working in partnership with our horses WITHOUT being in the saddle. It takes horsemanship and connection to a whole new level. *Likes*

My big stationbred boy took 'pony rides' for the kids today. He just loved it. He usually doesnt show much interest in people but with beginners he is totally diffferent. Sniffing them and generally treating them like he was their grandfather.

oh cool - its lovely when the horses respond so lovingly. My boy took my two human boys for a ride and they looked so teeny tiny up there but they loved every minute of it and so did Pedro!!!!

gave riding a miss in the end. gray and dull here today and I have hayfever. Made me grumpy specially when it took me an hour to catch my little mule to trim him. But got him done as well as Angel and Lucy, so day was not a total write off. Oh and got 3 loads of washing down and cleaned the floors. now i think I will have a bath and go to bed and hope to get more done tomorrow

I had to hide items for a treasure hunt at a birthday party once. Was so good at it that the kids couldn't find them all. Trouble was neither could I and I had only hidden them 15 minutes earlier.

Have you tried Scaife Transport or Woodville Wairarapa. We rang Scaife beginning of the week and he is taking the two from our place north early tomorrow. Other small one worth trying is W&S Horse Transport bot h him and Scaife have normally been able to move horses quickly for us.

We had the woman screaming at 3am right outside our place. And the boyfriend shouting. I was just getting out of bed when the police turned up.
Olwen when I first met Nigel he was 10hh of seriously evil, ungelded, 4-y-old attack pony. He was owned by the Mongrel Mob (So I guess you could say he was a mobster) and he had just beaten up a very nice friend of mine who had found him wandering. He proceeded to beat me up too (I still have a scar on my shoulder)He front-footed and bit and hung on like a pit-bull.
The second time I met Nigel was some months later and he was in the pound and about to be shot for beating up several animal control officers. They wouldn't even go in the paddock with him. My friend and I decided he deserved a second chance so she saved him and I took him home. He's now gelded, taught to lead and tie up, and is amost a good citizen. Almost ; )
