Hi all, I just impulse bought a ticket to Auckland, don't have cash for a return fare till Weds next week, if anyone could help me (23yr old single female) out with a nights accom somewhere, would be hugely appreciated. Email calvin_klein9 @ hotmail.com I'm playing the coward card and fleeing for a few days, but my nerves can't put up with much more of this :S

Sorry havent got enough room for me and the cat let alone anyone else but good on you for deciding to escape - think I would have too. Have you got someone to check your horses while you are away? Was seriously thinking of going to the Chch Metallica concert until the quake hit and luckly managed to find even though its the expensive version ticket to one of the Auckland concerts (going to it the vip way)

Yeah the paddock owners house overlooks my 2, so they have 24/7 supervision. Plus I have lots of FAST growing grass, will just open up the gates and allow them to have both paddocks. Mum can go out and check on them and maybe buy some hay to dump but i dont think they'll need it. My only concern re. horses is covers, what to leave on them. They've had winters combos on for a long time now, they do get hot in them during the day. Wondering whether pulling em off altogether is the safest option.. they don't really have any shelter in their paddock is all. They can be bastards to catch so no chance of getting mum or paddock people to do it. Thoughts re. covers? Neither are clipped

I am staying with one of my boy friends (who likes other boys heh) but I don't know how long i'll be able to stay there. Just don't want to be a nuisance, you know. So if I could find a few other potential couches, I'd feel a bit better about the situation. Fully relying on just the one (notoriously useless) friend at the moment is all. Thanks guys. And sorry to be one of those people that only posts when they need something :S

I have an unlined rambo but I think it leaks. Also got a wool lined canvas I can put on the other boy.. Just not too sure about the waterproofness of either of them. Though im leaning towards them or naked over the winter combos

Sorry just had a chance to catch up with the board. You guys in & around Chch really have my heartfelt sympathies with all that you have had to cope with this last week. I really hope that it quietens down & life for you all can return to some kind of normality though imagine its not going to be for some time.

Have just been told the horses all have lice so am guessing my fella will too...they are using flystrike powder at the moment is this what I should be using and does it last?
Reply
  Simone -   Picture Perfect Paparoa!  1:47PM    09-Sep-10
Yeah, that should work or Pestene. You usually need to do them a couple of times to get any eggs that hatch after the first lot.
Reply
  Bridget   Manawatu  1:52PM    09-Sep-10
do you have to do the whole body or just the forlock mane down the back and tail? Where do the little buggers live? Never had to deal with lice before
Reply
  Simone -   Picture Perfect Paparoa!  2:25PM    09-Sep-10
I just make sure I rub it well in, the full length of their top line. They live at the base of the forelock, mane & tail where it's warm. Horrible little buggers!

Monkey straps...what are the goods bads etc and also are you allowed to do dressage using them? Just asking as I think the instructor I will be using likes her riders to use the(correct me if I am wrong Jenny)
Reply
  Simone -   Picture Perfect Paparoa!  1:52PM    09-Sep-10
Um, a monkey strap serves the same purpose as grabbing a big handful of mane to hang on. I'm not sure that would be a very good look in a dressage test?

  Bridget   Manawatu  1:55PM    09-Sep-10
From what I have been told its used to hold the outside rein in one place ....not too keen on the idea myself as I have always been taught to be soft with my hands and not to have my hands that low anyways....

  Ali   Ypuk  1:58PM    09-Sep-10
Heaps of dressage riders use them Bridget even at the highest end of the sport.

I throught it was a strap you put across your dees on you saddle to grab onto as simone said. Is this a new aid?
Reply
  Haylee   whangarei  2:19PM    09-Sep-10
you can still have a soft outside hand using a monkey strap it is not rigidly fixed Unless you make it so lol). Helped me enourmously because I just kept being too soft and giving that outside rein away even without realising it.
Reply
  Amber   Auckland  2:20PM    09-Sep-10
Katrena is correct, it is just a strap from d-ring to d-ring. It isn't necessarily used to hold the outside rein in place (unless using it as a training tool) but it is good to grab for your own stability if you need to for any reason (i.e. I found when initially teaching flying changes it helped me stay with the horse a bit because we were all over the place). And to Simone's point it is similar to grabbing mane BUT if you don't have much mane to grab AND you want to maintain your correct seat then the monkey strap is a great help.

  Simone -   Picture Perfect Paparoa!  2:31PM    09-Sep-10
Oh, ok. I'd never considered using a monkey strap to steady the outside rein. Personally, I use other things to improve balance & hands as if you're relying on a monkey strap for either of these things, you're just hanging on & not actually fixing the problem but I can see how it might be beneficial in situations like Haylee & Amber described.

  Bridget   Manawatu  2:32PM    09-Sep-10
Thanks for the clarification :)****not being a skite or anything but I have really good balance etc so perhaps it would be more of a nuissance to me than anything
Reply
  Jenny   Waimauku  2:41PM    09-Sep-10
If you're wanting to steady the outside rein I much prefer using the saddle blanket strap. The monkey strap is just a bit far back to be honest for steadying an outside rein.

  jenny   Taihape  2:45PM    09-Sep-10
You are right Bridget, Rachel does like you to have a monkey strap. Though you could be like me and have one but don't use it unless I'm yelled at!!! Also, the next tentative date is 25th Oct. Though it might be a problem as it's Labour Day.
