I'll drink to that *chin chin* - I don't normally drink mid-week but we have gone through a copious amount of wine in the last few days! (My excuse is that it's good for settling the nerves!).

A week off work, horse-owner style: Day 1; horsey shopping. Day 2: Work 2 horses, shovel 1 tonne of shingle into a muddy gateway. Day 3: work 1 horse, start to spread half-tonne of ag lime in paddock (by hand). So far day 4 is looking like finishing the lime, working 3 horses and cleaning out a shed. I'm filthy, I smell bad and all my nails are broken. Loving it!

I had a pupil gelding a few years back that was seriously damaged goods, he ended up blind bolting through my yard gate and two fences breaking his leg :( And my friend has a black filly - we call her the black devil..... So my personal opinion isnt great HOWEVER i do like the type he throws... and yes they can jump.

we have had quite a few, they have all been very even tempered and typey but yes most are bay and some black.

Which should come first? Chicken or egg scenario here, but I am wanting to get back into riding, so am currently looking for grazing and a lease horse. Its hard to find grazing at the moment, which means I haven't looked at horses yet, but am I going in the right order, or should I look for a horse first and grazing after?
Reply
  Simone -   Picture Perfect Paparoa!  5:42PM    08-Sep-10
I would look for the lease horse first as some can stay where they're already grazing.

What sort of horse are you looking to lease?? I have one I might consider leasing out (TB, raised on West Coast though, so not fizzy, tough as, great doer, quiet but hasn't done much of anything other than hacking) rolly-poly@hotmail.com if you want more info.

I really want a horse that is safe and confident in jumping, and aside from that am open to anything.

oh, good luck, i'm so excited for you as I have been back riding a few months and love it. Can't wait to hear how you get on.

  Karen   Canterbury  9:47PM    08-Sep-10
I'd go for the horse first as you can usually either get the owner to keep it a bit longer while you find grazing, or find temporary grazing while you look for 'perfect' grazing. I've been looking for the right lease situation for over a year and still nothing suitable so it's just as well I didn't organize the grazing first! Hope you find something soon :)

You can always have temp grazing at my place if you get the horse before the grazing, while you look for the right grazing.

Hi there, does anyone know of anyone who sells (in NZ) either barnes buckles or safestyle stirrups - also any feedback on which is better (for show jumping) would be appreicated.
Reply
  Fiona   Hamilton  6:19PM    08-Sep-10
I like my barnes buckles....I'm afraid some of the safety stirrups are a bit ugly in my opinion, and many do not enable the use of flexi irons. Basically you can use the buckles with any type of stirrup, and they are pretty unobtrusive.

  Alyth Long   Waikato  6:57PM    08-Sep-10
Personally I don't trust Barnes safety buckles to stay done up when they are meant to!! I use flexi irons with a cage in front. They may not look good for the showring but they are so safe!! I love that combination!!

I got my Barnes buckles from SW in Pukekohe. Use them with my flexi irons, better to be safe than sorry.

Val Clune from Maramamrua sells them at a good price, and yes they are great for showjumping,Barnes buckles I mean, have them on all four showjumping saddles.

SW in Puke sells Barnes buckles. I bought my safestyle stirrups in from Holland - they were cheaper than local saddlers had them at the time. I have the Barnes buckles on 3 of my Spanish saddles.

Really Alyth?Never ever had them come undone apart from when needed, did you have alot of lower leg movement to do this?

Mine have certainly never come undone, and I have a shocking lower leg (and am not a lightweight) :)

Thank you very much to everyone for your help and advice - I'll give Saddlery warehouse a call tomorrow and see if they still stock the barnes buckles ... if not I shall try Val, so thank you for that Mrs Mercury.

I've never had Barnes Buckles come undone unless they were supposed to!! I love them. If you google them there is a website you can buy from and they are often for sale (new) on TM.

Willow dear, after moving two mongrel colts from Hununa to my place, one total little piggy that couldn`t give a shit if he hurt himself or not,I can only sing the praises of James Lilburn,Premier Horse transport, they were fantastic. We really were deceiding if it was all worth it or not and they managed so well to load and transport them with no issues at all.

Anyone want a Standarbred Mare? 10 years old, ex breeder (had several foals), don't know her racing history but she's from very good pacing lines though she trots in the paddock just fine (some don't), very pretty, a bit short (about 15 hands), don't know her riding history but her temperament can't be faulted so she's likely to be a piece of cake to turn into a riding horse. Owner isn't going to breed her again due to lack of time and doesn't need a riding horse so she's in need of a good home. mail me at lmalbany@hot mail.com I'll be off line for a bit so best to mail and I'll forward you his contacts.
